Artist Statement
“I make work using a range of media layering paint, pencil, pen, collage, fabric, and found images to create rich surfaces. My current practice has a meditative quality exploring the inner landscape of experience, in which there is an impermanent play of space, shape, light and texture. I am interested in the fleeting moment, pattern, fabrics, the grid and repetition. The work is a departure from previous narrative-based painting and installation exploring identity politics and Black women’s history but continues a dialogue with the experience of transformation. I explore the making of images and the language of paint by playing with the binaries of spontaneity and choice; accidental mark making and control; absence and presence; the macro and micro in order to disrupt the habitual and explore the nature of perception” ~DS
